Summary

Classes began at the Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy on 14 March 1927, with the official opening occuring on 27 April 1927. The Duchess of York took part in the ceremony (Docherty, 1981, pp. 71 and 72). The inaugural principal was Miss R. S. Chisholm and classes offered included cookery, laundry, housewifery, dressmaking, needlework, millinery, machine knitting, art and design, physiology and office. There were also specialised classes for Diploma and Domestic Arts Students (Docherty, 1981, p. 71). The Emily McPherson College of Domestic Economy was amalgamated with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1979.
