The Melbourne Printing Trades School was proclaimed by the Governor in Council on 21 October 1947. The following month a notice was published in the Education Gazette stating the Education Department's intention to build a printing trades school. The first meeting of the School Council occurred on 19 November 1948 and classes commenced on 23 May 1950 (Eckersall, 1980, pp. 163, 167 and 169).
Details
The Working Men's College had been offering classes in printing since June 1899, and the construction of a printing school had begun at the college (now the Melbourne Technical College) when the Education Department announced that it also intended to build a printing school (The Fulfilment of an Ideal, [1958?]; SER-09909, 15 December 1947, pp. 1-2, RMIT University Archives; Herald, 9 February 1948, p. 3). According to principal Frank Ellis, the Director of Education 'also verbally and briefly announced that this [would] replace the Printing School of the [Melbourne Technical] College' (SER-09909, 15 December 1947, p. 2, RMIT University Archives).
In December 1947, arrangements were made for the transfer of process engraving, lithography and bookbinding to the new school, whilst composing and machining were to stay at the Melbourne Technical College pending building developments (Eckersall, 1980, p. 166; Nilsson, 'Report on Technical Education' in Minister of Education, 1951. p. 17).
The name of the Melbourne Printing Trades School was changed to the Melbourne School of Printing and Graphic Arts in July 1950 (Eckersall, 1980, p. 168).
