Ronald Reay Mackay succeeded Frank Ellis as principal of the Melbourne Technical College. Mackay's earliest association with the college was from 1922 to 1924 when he studied the electrical engineering diploma; a course he did not finish. He became a laboratory demonstrator in 1923 and by 1930 he had been put in charge of all electrical trades classes at the college. During this position Mackay developed the first motion-picture operators course in Australia and he was subsequently appointed head of radio and electrical trades in 1940. Mackay was appointed principal in 1952 and held the position until his death (Murray-Smith and Dare, 1987, pp. 347-349).
