Summary

Mark (born Marko) Strizic was an internationally renowned photographer and painter. Born in Berlin and raised in Zagreb, he became a refugee at the end of World War II, fleeing Yugoslavia for Austria before settling in Melbourne in 1950. Part of a generation of post-war migrant artists who transformed Australian visual culture, he initially studied physics part-time at the Royal Melbourne Technical College, where he also discovered photography and the distinctive light and urban landscape of his adopted city. In 1967 he became the first photographer to be given a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, and in 1973 he was the first photographer acquired by the National Gallery of Australia. He later taught photography at several tertiary institutions, including Preston Technical College (1975-1977), reflecting a strong connection with technical and art education in Victoria.
