Frederick Campbell was appointed the first secretary (renamed Director from 1891) of the Working Men's College in March 1887 (Murray-Smith, 2006; Murray-Smith and Dare, 1987, pp. 26-28 and 472). He held the position until his retirement in October 1913 (Age, 14 February 1930, p. 9; Murray-Smith and Dare, 1987, pp. 131 and 472). In 1925 a book written by Campbell, entitled The Working Men's College in the Making, 1887-1913, was released. A memorial mural in honour of Campbell was unveiled in the Entrance Hall of the Melbourne Technical College in 1935 (SER-09907, 25 November 1935, p. 1595, RMIT University Archives).
