Lilias Bertha Lenne was educated at Merton Hall in Melbourne. In 1940 she enrolled in a commercial course at Melbourne Technical College, where she also studied photography. Lenne served in the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) from 1942 to 1946, working as a photographic assistant in the Photographic and Copying Section of the Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME). Before her marriage to fellow professional photographer Clement Scale in 1949, Lenne ran her own photography business in Hepburn Springs specialising in portraits of children and weddings. Lenne may have been among the earliest photographers to document an entire wedding from start to finish.
