Summary

Archibald James (AJ) Campbell was a prominent Australian naturalist and photographer. Born in Fitzroy, Victoria, he worked in the Victorian and later Federal Customs Department, retiring in 1914, while pursuing a parallel career in field natural history. Campbell studied photography at Melbourne's Working Men's College and was an active member of the WMC Photographic Club, combining scientific observation with the emerging technology of photography. A pioneer of bird photography in Australia, he used the camera to document species and their habitats in the field. He helped instigate the meetings that led to the formation of the (Royal) Australasian Ornithologists Union in 1901, later serving twice as president. His landmark work, 'Nests and Eggs of Australian Birds' (1900), remains an important reference in Australian ornithology.
