Benjamin Douglass was elected Vice-President of the inaugural council of the Working Men's College in 1882. He held this position until 1886 (Murray-Smith and Dare, 1987, pp. 21 and 469). Douglass was a prominent trade unionist, instrumental in the Eight Hours movement in Australia (Merrifield, 2006).
