- Summary
The Oxford Scholar Hotel was originally named the County Court Hotel and was constructed by H. Maxwell in 1887 on the site of an earlier hotel with the same name. The name of the hotel was changed to the Oxford Hotel in 1892. The Working Men's College was opened opposite the hotel in June 1887, and 'the hotel played a key role in student social life since that date' (Melbourne Planning Scheme Incorporated Document: Central City Heritage Review Statements of Significance, 2013, p. 88).
