Building 49 was owned by H. W. Gossard of Asia Pty Ltd, an undergarments manufacturer, prior to its purchase by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1991. RMIT's Architecture and Building Department occupied the building from the 1970s (RMIT University, undated).
