1915 - Working Men's College Council make an offer to the Government to assist in training returned soldiers

Summary

According to Murray-Smith and Dare (1987, p. 140), 'as early as August 1915 the Council of the Working Men's College made an offer to the government to assist in training returned soldiers for positions in technical schools'. It was not until early 1918 that attention was paid to the educational future of Australian soldiers. In addition to an AIF education service being established in Europe in May 1918, and the establishment of organised education and re-education for returned soldiers by the newly-established Repatriation Department in April 1918, four hundred returned soldiers attended the Working Men's College in 1918.
