Summary

On Wednesday 21 March 1934 the Sir John and Lady Higgins Chemistry Laboratories were opened by the Minister to Public Instruction, the Hon. J. W. Pennington CBE MLA. At the same ceremony, the old laboratories were conferred with the name The David Avery Laboratories by the Director of Education, Mr J. McRae. David Avery was the first Head of the Chemistry Department (ER-09907, 26 March 1934, p. 1401, RMIT University Archives).
