Elizabeth 'Betty' Ann Churcher AO was a pioneer in the art sector in Australia. She was Dean of the School of Art and Design at the Phillip Institute of Technology, and was the first female director of a state art gallery, appointed Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1987. Following this position, Churcher was appointed Director of the National Gallery of Australia, a position she held from 1990 to 1997 (Vaughan, 2015, p. 30; National Australia Day Council, undated).
