- Summary
Leonard French OBE is known for his stained glass work at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) (completed in 1968) and the National Library of Australia (Art Guide Australia, 2017; Grishin, 2017). French began a signwriting apprenticeship at the age of fourteen with Melbourne signwriting firm A. C. Mence. As part of his apprenticeship, French was required to attend Melbourne Technical College. According to Grishin (1995, p. 15), the signwriting classes were held in the same building as the Art School and French got the attention of the head of the Art School, sculptor Victor Greenhalgh. French began sitting in on Greenhalgh's art classes and painting in the evenings and on weekends.
