William Murphy was a key organiser in raising funds to match Francis Ormond's bequest for a working men's college in Melbourne (Hagan, 2006). He was the first secretary of the Melbourne Trades Hall Council, and secretary of the Eight Hours Committee (The Argus, 1 March 1921, p. 6). Murphy was also a member of the Anti-Chinese League (Hagan, 2006).
