Glossary

Abstract - provides a summary of the article. An abstract helps you determine if the information is useful or not.

Bibliographic database - contains only references eg: author, title, publication details of books, journal articles or other materials. May include abstracts or summaries of books, journal articles or other materials.

Bibliography - list of references to books, journal articles or other materials. A bibliography can be found at the end of essays or assignments or within books or at the end of journal articles.

Bulletin boards - give access to current information for a group of people ie: like notice-boards are hung in organisations.

Call numbers - each item in a library collection is classified in a subject area by some classification system. At RMIT University Library we use the Dewey classification system. You will find call numbers on the spine of the book on the shelves. The call number determines where the book is held on the shelf eg: 391.346 D345  (Main Call Numbers for Fashion & Textile Design are: 391 & 746)

Citing - quoting a reference eg: book, author, passage; within a written or oral presentation.

Discussion groups - a way of communicating electronically with a group of people via the Internet

Document delivery - a service provided by the library to gain access to materials that cannot be found at RMIT University Library. For more information, visit the Opens in new windowDocument Delivery Service.

Electronic database - is a organised collection of text/graphics based information either in CD-ROM format or as an on-line database accessed via telecommunication networks or the Internet

Electronic Reference Library Server -  a common central computer that runs electronic databases

Email - electronic mail; the sending and receiving of electronic messages by telecommunication networks or the Internet

ERL - Electronic Reference Library - is made up of electronic databases using the same software and linked to a common central computer

Full-text - you can view an item's actual contents on the computer screen, rather than a reference to the item

Hypertext - a form of text retrieval which interconnects documents so that retrieval and cross-referencing is possible

Index - allows you to search fields or categories of information stored within a database

Keywords - words which convey the significant meaning of a concept

Local Area Network (LAN) - the linking of personal computers or workstations so they can communicate with each othr within a small geographical area

Newsgroup - a running collection of messages on a particular topic that are passed between a group of people or organisations.

Periodicals - a publication issued continuously, daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly basis eg: journals, newspapers, newsletters, magazine

Refereed - this refers to (mainly) periodical articles which have been assessed by a expert for inclusion in academic publications

Remotely - off-campus; accessed outside the RMIT Local Area Network

RMIT Local Area Network - the linking of personal computers or workstations from across RMIT sites, and connected to a common central computer (called the "server")

Subject - or topic, keyword

Synonym - word denoting the same thing(s) as another but suitable to different contexts eg: fashion/vogue, dress/clothing

Telnet - Internet service allowing one computer to log onto another

Terms - another word for keywords

URL - Uniform resource locator. The unique address of any web document eg: http://www.lib.rmit.edu.au.  This address can be typed in at the URL or Location box within Netscape Navigator or Address box in the Internet Explorer.

WebSPIRS - brand name of a web interface database.
